Our gentle, stress-free root canals save your tooth, relieve your pain, and restore your healthy smile.
Have you ever met anyone who likes the idea of getting a root canal? The problem with this way of thinking is that the reasons for dreading a root canal don’t even exist anymore. With improved techniques and technology and the support of a caring dental team, patients at our Fort Collins, CO dental office often tell us that their root canal procedure was the most comfortable they’ve ever had.
The outermost layer of a tooth is dental enamel, and beneath the enamel is a softer layer called dentin. The innermost layer of your tooth contains dental pulp that carries the nerves, tissue, and blood supply that keep your natural tooth healthy and alive.
Dental enamel is hard, but the pulp can become infected because of a crack in the tooth, repeated dental procedures on a tooth, or advanced decay or gum disease. When the infection reaches the nerve, it causes excruciating pain.
Signs of an infected tooth include:
Dr. Humbert recommends root canal therapy to relieve your pain by removing the infection that’s causing it. If we don’t perform the procedure promptly, the pain will worsen, and we will probably recommend extracting the tooth.
Everyone on our dental team understands how stressful the procedure can seem to many of our patients. We want you to know that we make your comfort a priority so you can relax and let us expertly care for your natural teeth.
Dr. Humbert starts by opening a small hole in your tooth so he can access the infected pulp. Using specialized instruments, he clears away the infected material, disinfects the tooth, and fills the hollowed out part of the tooth with a rubber-like material. The final step is to seals the tooth with a temporary filling to protect as it heals.
We allow the tooth to heal for about two weeks and may prescribe antibiotics to be sure the infection is gone. While we have saved the tooth, it may become brittle. It is for this reason that we often place a dental crown on top of a root canal-treated tooth.
Most of our patients tell us that a root canal with Dr. Humbert is the most comfortable and stress-free they’ve ever had. But you may be one of the many people who can benefit from sedation dentistry for their root canal in Fort Collins.
We offer nitrous oxide sedation to take the edge off your anxiety and give you a sense of comfort and well-being during your procedure. Is your anxiety a little more profound? We also offer IV sedation administered by a dental anesthesia team right here in our comfortable and familiar dental office.

First of all, everyone in the office is incredibly kind and patient. I have had many bad dentist experiences in the past (other dentists) which gives me great anxiety and I cry almost every time I even think about going, let alone walk through the door. Thankfully, Dr. Humbert is very patient as I work through my fears and doubts, explaining exactly what will happen and what my options are.
There is never any pressure to do anything, which I really appreciate. In my experience with Centre Family Dentistry, I have had great Dental Assistants, but my favorite is Marsha! Marsha, Marsha, Marsha! I appreciate her demeanor and patience with me as I cry (almost always) through my visits. She is down to earth and brings a sense of calm while I am there, even getting me to laugh and take my mind off my fears.
I'm getting better with the help of EVERYONE there in the office. There is no judgement and I appreciate that so much. Kudos to the whole team!- Cassie M.
