The Benefits of Sedation Dentistry in Fort Collins

There are numerous reasons why patients experience dental anxiety, and sedation dentistry in Fort Collins is perfect for patients who:
As you can see, whatever the reason for your anxious feelings, sedation dentistry can help you overcome your fear and seek the treatment you need. And when we know that you’re comfortable and at ease, our dental team can work more efficiently to get you out of the dental chair faster.

Sedation Dentistry to Fit Every Need

Each of our patients is unique, so we offer three types of dental sedation to accommodate your needs:

Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous oxide or laughing gas that you inhale through a small, comfortable nasal mask. The soothing effects take hold in just a few moments, and you’ll experience a warm sense of comfort and well-being. You will remain fully conscious, but you’ll be only vaguely aware of what’s happening around you.

When Dr. Humbert finishes your procedure, we’ll stop the flow of nitrous and have you breathe pure oxygen for several minutes. This will clear your mind and eliminate any lingering drowsy feeling. You’ll leave our Fort Collins, CO dental office feeling alert, refreshed, and ready to get back to your busy day.

Oral Conscious Sedation

Many of our patients can benefit from more profound relaxation than nitrous oxide provides. For those patients, we offer oral conscious sedation.

Dr. Humbert will prescribe a sedative and instruct you to take the medication about an hour before your dental procedure. The goal is for you to already be in a relaxed state when you arrive at Centre Family Dentistry for treatment.

With oral sedation, you will remain conscious but feel very calm and drowsy. Many patients get so relaxed that they fall asleep, but we can easily awaken you when our team needs to communicate with you.

Since the medication stays in your system for several hours, you will need a friend or family member to drive you to and from your appointment.

Intravenous (IV) Sedation

Intravenous or IV sedation induces a deep state of relaxation and a sleeplike state. If you deal with any of the anxieties listed above, IV sedation at our Fort Collins dental office will allow you to finally get the dental treatment you need.

At Centre Family Dentistry, your safety and comfort are our priorities, and when you choose IV sedation with us, you couldn’t be in better hands. We bring in an experienced anesthesia team who specializes in dental sedation to safely administer comfortable IV sedation here in a familiar location with people you know and trust.

Since the medication is administered directly into your bloodstream, it provides immediate anxiety relief. You’ll feel completely relaxed, drowsy, and experience a dream-like state.

When you leave our office, you will need a driver to get you home safely. Plan to take the day off and rest while the medicine wears off. Rest and drink plenty of fluids, and we will follow up with a phone call to check up on you later that day.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

You are technically awake during dental sedation. However, with some options, you are so close to a sleep state that you’re unlikely to recall your treatment.

Fort Collins Sedation Dentistry Options

Our dentists are happy to offer three varieties of dental sedation, and we can discuss the option that best meets your needs.

For mild sedation, we typically recommend nitrous oxide. This is a relaxant administered through a nasal mask. After we remove the mask, the easy and detached feelings go with it. This makes nitrous oxide ideal for patients who have plans after seeing the dentist or need to drive home from treatment.

Oral and IV sedation are more potent, so you’ll need a friend to drive you home from treatment. With this type of sedation, it’s essential to rest and not make any important decisions until the next day.

Your dentist may recommend more than one option.

To learn whether sedation is a safe choice for you, your Fort Collins dentist provides a consultation, which includes taking a health history.

At Centre Family Dentistry, we understand the visiting the dentist is not at the top of everyone’s list and that procedures and sometimes even cleanings can be anxiety-inducing experiences for some of our patients.

We are committed to creating the best dental experience possible, and apart from our friendly team and welcoming dental office, we help do that by offering sedation dentistry.

Sedation Dentistry Can Help

Using a light sedation method by administering nitrous oxide–commonly called laughing gas–we can ease our patients into a relaxed state that can make the dental experience much more pleasant. It will wear off in time for you to safely drive yourself home.

Oral conscious sedation requires medication to induce a dreamy, relaxed state. Because the prescription is longer lasting, you will need a ride home from your appointment.

For some cases, we might also recommend deeper sedation through an IV injection. This heavier sedation will take longer to wear off, and the patient will need a ride home.

We don’t want to let our patients’ anxieties and fears prevent them from getting the dental treatment they need.

We use sedation for various reasons. We consider it for multiple or invasive procedures, but we can also use it at your request. For example, if you have an easy gag reflex or suffer from dental phobia, you might ask for dental sedation.

We offer three types of sedation dentistry in Fort Collins, CO.

Dental Sedation Types

Nitrous oxide is the mildest form of dental sedation. Delivered through a nasal mask, the safe gas eases anxiety and offers tranquility. In addition, nitrous oxide has no lingering effects. So, you can return to work or go on with your day.

Oral sedation is more potent, but you’ll still be able to respond to your dentist during treatment.

IV sedation is the most potent form of dental sedation we offer.

With oral or IV sedation, you’ll need transportation and should rest for the remainder of the day.

Your dentist may choose to combine sedation options based on your needs. However, we do not administer any relaxants unless we’ve taken a thorough health history and your dentist believes that sedation is a safe and suitable option for you.

Dr. Humbert will prescribe a calming medication that you should take about an hour before your appointment.
